Didier Digard on for the injured Shawky showed his passing skills and found Stewy with a cross. For once, the England winger showed a deft touch with his head rather than his left foot and dropped the ball onto Aliadieres left side.
The Frenchman still had plenty to do but with commendable calm he rolled his marker, made the space for the shot and stroked it past the despairing Kirkland to nestle into the corner of the net in front of a wildly excited Away End.
The goal celebrations on the pitch and in the dugout showed what getting that break meant.
But even then the time left seemed endless shots of Gate and Coops on TV later showed they were sharing the tension - but Wigan had no more ideas left and lumping the ball upfield in the air was only ever going to be swallowed up by Wheats and Riggs.
But then the whistle blew and the celebrations could begin. Gate made sure that he directed the players across to The Away End who made sure that the most was made of the occasion. And how they loved that Gate salute!
Everyone knew what a vital game this was and the importance of this result to Boros season. It was good to come away with three points to take into the International break and it was the perfect set up for our next game against Chelski.
Later...
Gates relief at the result was palpable in his post match interviews, pleased to be the mugger rather than the victim for once.
However, he was as honest as ever about the quality of the game overall.
He even managed some humour about how glad he was that Boro had scored so late given their propensity to concede late and that maybe his Mrs. knew more about football than he did when shed told him that it was all about whether your luck was in or not!
On MotD later, Boros game was on last as ever but got more time than usual as there were only four games to fit into the hour slot.
Gary Lineker, in the Kermit role in what is becoming more and more like The Muppet Show without the clever scripting and the charm, and Stadtler and Waldorf (Hansen and Shearer), praised Boros defending and focused on how well Wheats, Riggs and Turnbull in particular had done.
They pointed out that Wheats had made his case to the watching Capello for a step up from the U21s to the full squad.
From the way their articles were written, the journalists from the Sundays quite clearly had gone to the game with the story of Wigan stuffing Boro mostly written and that the first half keyboard bashing hadnt changed their minds.
What happened in the eighty-ninth minute had necessitated hurried changes to their first and last paragraphs and the quotes from the managers and the subs had had to change the headlines.
The Mondays were somewhat schizophrenic in both praising Boros core of English players who had done so well against Wigan especially Wheats yet failed to pick up the irony that Heskey had been picked for the full Eng-er-lund squad and the man who had so comprehensively subdued him Wheats had not.
Boro can now enjoy what Gate described as 'a happier training ground over the next few days' and, hopefully, get more resources back from injuries.
This result stopped the rot and set the basis but the challenges ahead are tough.
What is clear is that outside the top three or four anyone can beat anyone in this seasons Premieship. Any points that arent expected from games against the likes of Chelski are a bonus but what will define Boros season is how they do against the rest.
The Wigan game got us back on track but the lessons learned have to be taken forward so that there are more outcomes like this and less like the Baggies game.
The Away End will return after the match with Blackburn on 25 October.
