Hurlers sling back-to-back-to-back 1-hitters
The Blair softball team faced some stiff competition this past Saturday at the Lincoln Southeast Invitational, but they proved the old saying that good things come in threes.
The Bears opening game against Lincoln Pius X was a pitchers' dual, with both teams held scoreless through the seven-inning regulation contest. Blair broke through in the top of the eighth, as Jordan Rasmussen squeezed in Taylor Fernua with the first run of the game, and Carly Nielsen added an insurance run on an RBI single. Nielsen shut the door on Pius in their half of the inning, as she and MacKenzie Welchert combined on a one-hitter for the game.
Nielsen and Welchert repeated their one-hit act in the second game, against Columbus, though this one lacked the drama, with the Bears winning 10-0. Presley Glaser and Whitney Frederick led the 11-hit Blair attack with three hits each.
The third time was a charm for the Nielsen-Welchert mound duo, as they combined for a third one-hit shutout of the day in beating No.8-rated Cozad 3-0 in the day's finale. Presley Glaser again had three hits, while Jordan Rasmussen chipped in two as part of a 10-hit Bear attack.
'It was a good tournament for us,' said Blair coach Jon Small. 'We beat two rated teams and a Class A team in route to winning our pool in the tournament.'
