If business blanched at the idea of having a trade unionist as premier, as stories of this 'man of charm' with a taste for French champagne, cognac, good food and Cuban cigars emerged, the workers must have wondered what had happened to their champion. Throughout his premiership, his speeches show he was very conscious of the needs of the poor. But he will mostly be remembered for more dramatic announcements: the Gautrain; Gauteng Online; his backing of big projects like the Cradle of Humankind as a World Heritage Site; his involvement in inner-city regeneration; and the hospital smart cards. For a long time, the Gautrain was called the Shilowa Express

FAIRBANKS A school crossing guard has figured out the secret of safety.
If he can draw drivers attention, theyll be mindful of the school-age children skittering across 10th and Lathrop en route to classes at Denali Elementary School.
So Webb Phillips makes sure to capture the eye of every passing driver, most of whom slow down, stop completely and offer a return greeting before cautiously powering through the school zone.
Phillips waves at every passing car, offering a deep, courtly bow to most, a gentlemans salute to others. His hat comes off often with a graceful flick of the wrist, brim bending in his heavily gloved fingers as he tips the headpiece

'Igor' Lacks That Special Charm
Posted on: Sunday, 28 September 2008, 15:00 CDT
When kids wander distractedly about the theater; couples nudge each other as they identify the voice actors ('ooh, that's Jay Leno'), and your 12-year-old daughter squirms about, rests her head on your shoulder, and starts cracking her knuckles during an animated movie, you know someone has taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque. Such is the case with 'Igor.'
What went wrong? Is Pixar the only studio that can get animation right these days?
Here's an anecdote: I attended the recent program 'Evening at the Opera' by the Bismarck Civic Chorus. I was amused by Menotti's 'The Telephone' and liked the way Puccini laid down a tune. Then Mozart's 'Cosi fan tutte' wafted effortlessly throughout the Belle and all else was forgotten as I was transported to that place where pure meets bliss

LOS ANGELES Billy Bob Thornton enters the room in a black, sleeveless Zildjian T-shirt and jeans. Tattoos adorn his muscular arms. A salt-and-pepper love patch and steely framed sunglasses complete the intimidating, bouncer/biker/ex-con picture.
But as soon as Thornton speaks in his warm Southern drawl, you feel like you're talking to your best buddy.
Yes, the actor who's developed quite a reputation in recent years as the consummate screen s.o.b

Nothing summed up the manner in which Chelsea handled this tricky fixture better than John Terry's response to the Stoke supporters who were taunting him from the corporate boxes during a post-match interview. Rather to the surprise of the protagonists he climbed the steps to the main stand before signing autographs, posing for photos and shaking hands with almost every one of them.
Not for the first time in the afternoon Chelsea had succeeded in quietening, if not silencing, the raucous home support, with the 100 or so fans congregated in the middle tier changing their chant from 'Terry is a Tosser' to 'There's only one John Terry' by the time the England captain had returned to pitchside. He was minus his tracksuit top, which had been handed over to one supporter as a souvenir but, as he departed down the tunnel, it felt like a few hearts and minds had been won as well as a football match

printDescdisplay:none; Paris charm found in Belleville
Edith Piaf's birthplace still very much alive with colorful culture
By By Emma Vandore| Associated Press|
Published on Sunday, Sep 28, 2008

PARIS: Tourists looking for old Paris charm and a taste of La Vie en Rose should head to Belleville, a largely overlooked part of the city and the birthplace of Edith Piaf.
Only five Metro stops away from Paris' town hall, Belleville has retained much of its working-class identity and still bubbles with concert halls, theaters and bars some of which Piaf once sang in.
Add to the mix successive waves of immigrants and young creative types out drinking, eating and carousing, and you get a funky atmosphere similar to New York's East Village.
It offers much for the visitor, not least a panoramic view over Paris that rivals Montmartre but is blissfully free of peddlers and hawkers.
Yet few tourists stray farther than Pere Lachaise cemetery, burial place for celebrities including Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and Piaf herself. Even the success of La Vie en Rose, which won actress Marion Cotillard a best-actress Academy Award and rekindled interest in Piaf's life, isn't drawing the masses to the neighborhood

KARLSRUHE.- Luis Buuel made more than a hint at his ambiguous, ironic intent when he entitled one of his most memorable films 'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie'. Apart from making an acid social critique, the film also shows us the fragile boundaries that exist between different ways of acting on reality.
Exploring the ambiguous relationship between art and technology, this exhibition suggests the existence of another form and another content inherent in the practice of media art. Technology as an instrument gives way to technique as a procedure that artists use to create visual poetics, sensory and formal explorations, and conceptual developments

The 24-year-old painter sits in a little bar in Kazimierz, Krakow's historic Jewish quarter.
'When communism was over,' I ask, 'what was the first thing you bought?'
Grzegorz (pronounced g-jay-goj, with hard g's like the word 'good') was just five years old when the Berlin Wall fell about 500 kilometres west of this city, Poland's cultural capital.

Now will the Rays?
Pitcher Andy Sonnanstine takes the mound tonight against Tigers starter Justin Verlander. The Rays should also be rested after having the quick turnaround yesterday, and lately Andy has been lights out. In Sonnanstine's past 3 starts he has an ERA of 0.92 (ace of the staff like numbers), while Verlander has been bad in his past 3 starts, 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA.
The Rays are hoping the third time is the charm when it comes to chances for clinching the division. Sonnanstine talked last night after the loss about how he feels ready and focused lately with all of his pitches.
Also, be sure to watch 10 News at 4 when Justin Allen will be talking to one of the Rays live. He also just posted a brand new video blog which you can watch on the right.

WASHINGTON -- The old John McCain was back Friday -- and that's good news for the Republican presidential nominee.
McCain brought his plain-spoken, wise-guy ways that work well in town-hall meetings to the presidential debate, while Barack Obama countered with his own trademark style -- crisp, point-by-point analyses of issues, answers in well-crafted paragraphs, little emotion.
The verdict: McCain did better than expected, because he was often the 2000 vintage McCain who dazzled voters with his give-'em-hell manner. Obama was Obama, and anyone who likes him was reminded why

Following the mysterious death of a female university student sometime back, tongues have wagged and noses have twitched Spectator bloodhounds caught the 'scent' around noon last Sunday and nosed pretty deep into an alleged involvement of students in satanic rites for monetary gain.
The vogue in some of the universities, as far as female students are concerned is, according to their own parlance, 'maintaining standards.' And maintaining standards means going fashionable and trendy with the latest designer wears any modern wardrobe can offer.
G-Strings, high-heeled shoes, gold chains and other accessories add up to paint the picture of a university girl 'maintaining standards.'
It also has to do with getting money to pay off hostel fees, eating the most expensive 'beef fried-rice with chicken and lobsters,' drinking red wine and generally living good while cracking at their academic courses.
And how do these girls finance such expensive lifestyles when some come from very poor families? Mates of the ill-fated girl told the Spectator about the unbecoming lifestyles of some of their colleagues who go to a jujuman in Ashaiman to prepare 'charms' for them to hook unto rich men in society.
'We hear some even go to the Republic of Benin to see voodoo priests to get these charms. Some of the girls disappear from school and when they come back after a week or so, they start leading lives they are not known for,' one student girl told Spectator. 'It is just amazing.'
When the girl (name withheld) died, rumours went round that she kicked the bucket because she allegedly misapplied whatever was given to her at the shrine to do to grab the big-shots.
'We hear that she was supposed to do something she either forgot or refused to do, and that caused her death,' the Spectator source said.
And who are the so-called rich men? 'Any person who is gainfully employed, is responsible or conspicuously seen to be living okay is a target these days, the source said. And if you are hooked by the charem you are most certain to forget all about your wife and children

(The Politico)A long-awaited win for the clean-energy industry came Tuesday when the Senate overwhelmingly approved an energy tax measure to extend production tax credits for wind and solar energy. It also establishes a new credit for plug-in electric vehicles and energy efficient home improvements.
The Senate has tried eight times previously to pass the clean energy subsidies in the past year, but the legislation has been stalled repeatedly by partisan fighting. The current credits are set to expire in December

From the vacants of West Balties ...
Rivalry week? Yawn. According to the Baltimore Sun, Monday night's game, which is usually as nasty as a Karl Rove-run political campaign, is practically turning into a love fest. From the sounds of it, Bart Scott and Hines Ward may meet at the 50-yard-line and read haikus to one another. In case you forget the genesis of the Scott-Ward/Steelers animus, OTBS recaps it for us. The Steelers aren't the only team with a bunch of guys banged up -- the Ravens could also be without some key personnel

Steve Ballmer dishes out the charm in Silicon Valley, hints at Red Dog, pledges to spend billions on search business said:
[...] Random Feed wrote an interesting post today onHere's a quick excerptYou can always count on Steve Ballmer for a good chuckle. I always shake my head at how this guy became the chief executive of Microsoft when he really should have been a hoarse-voiced football coach. The ever-charming Ballmer was on stage tonight at a Churchill Club event in Silicon Valley. Ann Winblad, venture capitalist at Hummer Winblad Partners, interviewed him for an hour on a wide range of subjects. Ballmer showed a few cards, expressed some opinions, and then cracked jokes when he coul [...]

We all know about second album syndrome, where a band spunk away their ideas on their debut then toss out a desultory follow-up (hello, Stone Roses), but what about album three? What got me thinking about this was the news today of a long-awaited third LP by My Bloody Valentine. It's been mooted for over a decade and a half, almost since their last one, in fact, 1991's legendary Loveless, the recording of which notoriously almost bankrupt Creation Records and sent Alan McGee spiralling towards a nervous breakdown. With any luck this one won't be as painful a process.
Then again, they're lucky to be getting the chance to make a third album

But it has limited lodgings, which can be hard to book because of demand, explains Rod, sporting an Ole Miss pullover in the school's blue and red colors. They've fallen in love with Oxford, considered an anomaly in often hardscrabble rural Mississippi. 'To us, it's a big bubble,' Rod says. 'You feel protected from the rest of the world. You have Deep South charm without the hillbilly.'
'It's so laid-back, and everyone's nice,' Debbie, a well-groomed blonde, chimes in. 'Plus there's the history.'
Small-town ways, city chic
A 1 -hour drive south of Memphis, the city (whose population swells to nearly 33,000 when Ole Miss is in session) is a manicured oasis of culture and prosperity in Mississippi. Antebellum mansions, BMWs, sorority beauties toting $1,000 handbags and hip, locally owned boutiques, bookstores, bars and restaurants are as common as the kudzu vines and farmland that dot the surrounding countryside. You won't find a Starbucks or McDonald's in the center of town.
Oxford, named after the elite British university, is famed for the university's Center for the Study of Southern Culture and as the adopted home of late Nobel Prize-winning Faulkner, whose fictional Yoknapatawpha County is based on Oxford's Lafayette County (say 'La-FAY-ette,' as locals do)

You know, 'You're an A, I'm a B, wanna go out tonight?'
Dating services in Japan use blood type to make matches, employers use it to evaluate job candidates, and morning TV shows and newspapers there regularly feature blood type horoscopes. 'They use it like people here follow astrology,' confirms my colleague, Download.com Senior Associate Editor Seth Rosenblatt, who lived in Japan for three years. 'But of course its origins are in eugenics, which is much more sinister.'
The charm--which sells at Tokyo's Strapya World for about $6--looks like a mini IV blood bag with a letter (A, B, AB, or O) written on the exterior. Fortunately, the red fluid on the inside isn't the real thing.
